Inguinal hernias are bulges in the groin along a natural area of weakness typically in the male groin. These typically cause pain with lifting or straining the abdominal wall. They can progress to larger sizes that can entrap bowel and bulge into the scrotum.
Robotic surgery has revolutionized treatment of inguinal hernias. Open inguinal hernia repair has a minimum 6 week recovery period. Patients undergoing robotic inguinal hernia repair typically feel back to normal at 2 weeks, and at that time start increasing activity to their normal level over the next week.

I would highly recommend Dr. Benjamin Johnson. He is an exceptional physician. I was referred to Dr. Johnson for a second opinion after getting conflicting advice following a first hospitalization for diverticulitis. I had one doctor who was insisting I needed an immediate colon resection surgery and another who was focused on some other findings relative to my bile & pancreatic ducts. Needless to say, I was confused and frustrated on top of not feeling well. Dr. Johnson was more helpful than both of the other doctors combined. He is extremely knowledgeable, very caring and patient. He explains things thoroughly in an easy to understand way for the patient. I brought him copies of my CT & MRCP and he quickly got me in to review my case. Despite being a surgeon, his recommendation was very clear – I did not need surgery. His questions were more in depth than the GI doctor I had seen. Since I live part of the year in Florida, he even did research to find me a surgeon there in the event of a need for an emergency surgery in the future. He explained the importance of surgeons using the cutting edge technology – similar to what he has at Swedish Covenant – in the outcomes for the patient. Ideally, I would make my way to back to Chicago and have Dr Johnson operate. I have complete trust in him and so appreciate all the help he has given me.
