What are Hiatal/Paraoesophageal hernias?

Hiatal/Paraesophageal hernia occurs when part or the entire stomach protrudes through the opening in the diaphragm, called the hiatus, into the chest.

This occurs when the ligament holding the esophagus and stomach to the diaphragm breaks down and can cause symptoms of acid reflux, difficulty swallowing, regurgitation of food, or cause the stomach to be cut off from its blood supply.
