Highlights:
- Robotic instruments shine in narrow operative fields as in this procedure.
- Less incisions than most laparoscopic surgeons.
- No reliance on surgical assistants to ‘drive’ the camera.
What are Hiatal/Paraoesophageal hernias?
When your stomach slides into your chest many problems can arise. These repairs are performed in the dome of the diaphragm and Robotic technology improves the precision in this small space.
Robotic surgery allows the surgeon to control the camera and the assisting arm themselves, taking the variable of a good surgical assistant or resident out of the equation. The high definition 3D vision also provides a higher level of precision.
The first line treatment is medical to control the symptoms of the hernia. However these aren’t always completely effective, and many have side effects with long term use.
If medical management doesn’t work, then surgery is often the answer.
The surgical procedure to treat these hernias pulls the stomach back into the abdomen, narrows the hole in the diaphragm and re-support the valve between the stomach and esophagus.

Patient Reviews
Dr. Benjamin Johnson is a genuine person to the core. I have gone through about 30 big and small surgeries in my life, and he is one of the top two surgeons I have ever met. Surgery of any kind is a fusion of skill and art; Dr. Johnson has clearly mastered that. He is also an extremely knowledgeable doctor who can simplify complex medical conditions to patients. I'd be recommending him to anyone who asks me for suggestions on where to get general surgery or surgeries in his areas of clinical interest. As an experienced surgery patient with a good sample size of doctors and their work, I can confidently say that Dr. Johnson is a rare talent!
Read MoreI would highly recommend Dr. Benjamin Johnson. He is an exceptional physician. I was referred to Dr. Johnson for a second opinion after getting conflicting advice following a first hospitalization for diverticulitis. I had one doctor who was insisting I needed an immediate colon resection surgery and another who was focused on some other findings relative to my bile & pancreatic ducts. Needless to say, I was confused and frustrated on top of not feeling well. Dr. Johnson was more helpful than both of the other doctors combined. He is extremely knowledgeable, very caring and patient. He explains things thoroughly in an easy to understand way for the patient. I brought him copies of my CT & MRCP and he quickly got me in to review my case. Despite being a surgeon, his recommendation was very clear – I did not need surgery. His questions were more in depth than the GI doctor I had seen. Since I live part of the year in Florida, he even did research to find me a surgeon there in the event of a need for an emergency surgery in the future. He explained the importance of surgeons using the cutting edge technology - similar to what he has at Swedish Covenant - in the outcomes for the patient. Ideally, I would make my way to back to Chicago and have Dr Johnson operate. I have complete trust in him and so appreciate all the help he has given me.
